PDF Metadata Removal FAQs

Answers to common questions about PDF document security, hidden properties, and XMP.

What is PDF metadata?

PDF metadata is hidden property information stored inside a PDF document. It typically includes the document title, the author’s name (often pulled from the computer profile), the creation and modification timestamps, the software application used to build the PDF (e.g. Word, Adobe, Canva), and even corporate organization properties.

Can a PDF contain EXIF data?

Yes, indirect EXIF data. While standard PDF formats do not hold camera EXIF parameters directly, a PDF document that contains embedded photos (like scans, smartphone images, or real estate listings) will retain the original EXIF and GPS location geotags inside those images, unless they are cleared first.

Are my PDF files safe on this website?

Absolutely. The PDF metadata scrubbing is performed 100% locally in your web browser. Your documents are never uploaded to any remote servers, ensuring complete confidentiality for private business, legal, academic, or personal documents. Your files never leave your device.

Does removing metadata modify the visual text or pages in the PDF?

No. The visual layout, text, pagination, images, and formatting of your document remain completely unchanged. The tool surgically targets only the XML-based XMP packets and document info dictionaries (Info dict) in the PDF’s binary layout and clears them.

Does this tool support bulk PDF metadata removal?

Yes! You can drag and drop multiple PDF files at once, inspect their properties, clean them in a single batch click, and download the cleaned documents packaged as a ZIP archive.

What metadata fields does this tool remove from a PDF?

The tool removes all standard document info dictionary fields — including Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, CreationDate, and ModDate — as well as embedded XMP metadata packets, which can contain more granular fields such as corporate organization names, software version strings, and revision history properties.

Can I remove metadata from a password-protected or encrypted PDF?

Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be cleaned until they are unlocked, because the metadata is part of the protected binary structure. You will need to remove the password protection first using a PDF tool, then run the file through our cleaner to strip the remaining document properties.

Does the tool work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. Scanned PDFs (image-based PDFs) are fully supported. The tool clears all document-level metadata properties. If the scanned pages contain embedded photos carrying EXIF or GPS data, those image-level tags will also be stripped during processing.
